Guided/Bilateral Drawing
This advanced art therapy technique assists you to explore your self-expression as well as any blocks, trauma or grief that may be held in your body.
Through rhythmic, repetitive movements, guided from within, you’ll be supported to follow your body’s inner wisdom. Participants are encouraged to track body sensations and draw them rhythmically, using both hands with eyes closed (eyes open with an unfocused gaze is also possible).
The approach isn’t image focused - it’s sensation based which may feel unfamiliar for some but only initially. It quickly becomes apparent that tension, tightness, pain, blockages and emotions can be released through movements on the page. When necessary, the therapist suggests archetypal shapes to provide structure, regulation for the nervous system and to support embodiment. As the process unfolds, participants listen to their inner guidance more and more and find their way naturally to healing and releasing tension.
Addressing Trauma
Guided drawing offers a self-directed approach which has proven particularly beneficial for those who suffer from traumatic stress and overwhelming experiences. One of the reasons for this is trauma that’s held within the body can be addressed without having to bring up the story of what happened, which prevents potential re-traumatising.
